But at least the original Privateer /works/.Buy Wing Commander™: Privateer – PC – EA EA Play FIFA 23 F1™ 22 Madden NFL 23 Apex Legends Battlefield™ 2042 The Sims 4 I'd much rather play Wing Commander 2 (and have!). I also had fond memories of the very first Privateer, but. It /seemed/ cool, but quickly became annoying. (* - You could get an upgrade to your radar-dish-thingy that would let you receive random distress calls little mini-missions as you're flying around in space. Playing Privateer 2 on Dosbox has always been a crapshoot for me it strangely seems a bit more stable, but has a lot of difficulty with joystick tracking my ship would just spin around endlessly no matter how I tried to calibrate the input. Luckily it was after I met Christopher Walken's character, though, so. I actually couldn't complete the game at all because it kept crashing at one particular specific point - docking with one particular planet - it would crash randomly before, but this /particular/ crash was 100% guaranteed to happen. Way back in the day, when Privateer 2 was still new, I played the crap out of it, but eventually just couldn't get past the emails(*), the bizarre combat respawning, and constant crashes. They're certainly entertaining, but tend to use massive hyperbole to accentuate the negatives.īut in this case, he's actually completely accurate, and it's not hyperbole. well, another Spoony review of a "popular game", like the Final Fantasies. Usually I view a Spoony review in much the same way that I view a Yahtzee review, or. Just a pity because once I got there (about halfway through the game), there wasn't anywhere else to go. Which didn't bother me much, because that was a pretty sexy ship, considering the rendering technology of the time. I don't remember it being quite as prone to crashing as the reviewer stated. So I ended up piloting the ship on the cover for pretty much the last half of the game. The bug that probably bothered me most was how on one of the few end-game ships (one of the big heavy gunships), the point of impact for weapon fire didn't actually intersect the crosshairs. I think forevermore I remember Clive Owen as "Hey, that's Lev Arris, the guy from Privateer 2!" Amazingly star-studded (I'd forgotten all the other big name actors like Christopher Walken and co that were in it) and campy. The FMVs were.well, the Spoony review summed it up pretty well. Yeah, there were elements of the game that were.subprime. Other games like Escape Velocity: Nova (yes, only 2d) and Transcendence (also 2d, but also Roguelike-in-spaaace) get close, too. X3 probably came closest (but space combat feels so.slooooow if you're not in one of the fast-but-brittle ships). It hit some fundamental itch for me in terms of sandbox space sim gameplay that I'm still trying to scratch. Heck, until I found out about dosbox, I think I actually kept my old Win95 machine just in case I wanted to go back and play Priv2. Somewhere, I still have my Privateer II CD, and I've kept it around so I could play it again (not that I have.).
